Introduction:
Caitlin Clark has become a household name in college women’s basketball, captivating audiences with her exceptional talent and record-breaking performances. Her court presence defies convention. She’s not merely a scorer; she’s the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer. Surpassing Pete Maravich’s record of 3,667 points, she’s not just rewriting records but reshaping perceptions of women’s basketball.
This project aims to delve into the impact of Caitlin Clark’s prowess on both her team’s success and the broader landscape of women’s college basketball. By analyzing her statistical contributions, audience engagement metrics, and team dynamics, we seek to gain valuable insights into the influence of individuals players on the sport.

Dataset Description:
For this analysis, we utilized publicly available data sets from NCAA, ESPN, and others. The NCAA website provides comprehensive statistics on player performance and team dynamics, while ESPN offers valuable insights into player metrics and game outcomes.
NCAA basketball statistics provide detailed player and team statistics of women’s college basketball. ESPN offers a wide range of resources for basketball enthusiasts, including game summaries, player profiles, and team ranks.
Additionally, we used a Microsoft Excel for data analysis and visualization. Microsoft Excel was used for initial data exploration, cleaning, and basic statistical analysis. It enables us to organize and analyze the datasets efficiently, providing valuable insights into Caitlin Clark’s performance and its impact on women’s college basketball.
Data Cleaning and Scrubbing:
Before conducting our analysis, I meticulously addressed data cleaning and preparation tasks to ensure the integrity and consistency of the datasets. This involved several steps:
1. Removing Duplicate Entries: I identified and eliminated any duplicate entries in the datasets to prevent redundancy and ensure accurate analysis.
2. Handling Missing Values: Missing data can significantly impact the reliability of the analysis. Employed various techniques, such as imputation or removal, to handle missing values appropriately and minimizing their impact on the findings.
3. Standardizing Data Formats: Inconsistencies in data formats can impede analysis and visualization efforts. We standardized data formats to ensure uniformity and facilitate seamless data processing.
By addressing these data cleaning tasks, I ensured that the datasets were well-prepared for analysis. This enabled me to create a variety of visualizations, including column, radar, bar, pie charts, and more to effectively explore and communicate Caitlin Clark’s performance and its impact on women’s college basketball.
Data Analysis:

Our analysis reveals a strong correlation between Caitlin Clark’s individual performance and her team’s success. By examining Caitlin’s scoring output over her college career. We observed a consistent upward trend in her scoring average as illustrated in the line chart created in Excel. (fig 1) This trend underscores her remarkable improvement.
Through correlation analysis conducted in Excel, we found a significant positive correlation between Caitlin Clark’s individual performance (e.g. points scored) and her team’s overall rank in the NCAA Division I women’s basketball. (fig 2)
Since Caitlin’s Sophomore year, the University of Iowa women’s basketball team has consistently been ranked in the top 10. As a lead scorer for all four years, Caitlin has been instrumental in contributing to the team’s offensive performance.
Additionally, Caitlin has achieved remarkable record-breaking achievements throughout her college career. She holds the record for the most career points (3,951) in both D1 Men’s and Women’s categories, further solidifying her status as a basketball player phenom. Caitlin scored the most points in a single season (1,234) in the D1 women’s category, showcasing her unparalleled scoring ability.
Overall, Caitlin Clark’s exceptional performance directly impacts her team’s success, reflected in their consistent high ranking. Her scoring prowess is one of Iowa’s driving forces in achieving success on the court. Games where Caitlin performs exceptionally tend to result in higher win percentages for her team, highlighting her pivotal role in their success
Scoring Trends of Caitlin Clark:
Caitlin Clark’s scoring trends over her college career demonstrate her consistency and dominance on the court. A comparison of her scoring statistics to those of other top players (fig 3), we can see that Caitlin has the highest number of points and assists among all six players analyzed. Caitlin averages an impressive 28.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 8.2 assists, with a field goal percentage of 46.2%. Her scoring ability stands out when compared to other NCAA women’s basketball greats. She has broken records and made a significant impact on her team’s performance.
Comparing Caitlin’s scoring statistics to those of other top players further solidifies her position as a standout performer in women’s college basketball. Her scoring consistency and volume are unmatched, making her a force to be reckoned with on the court. By creating visualization such as line charges and shooting maps (fig 4) we can highlight Caitlin’s scoring milestones and her impact on her team’s offensive efficiency. Notably, Caitlin’s scoring output has surpassed benchmarks set by other top players establishing her as one of the most prolific scores in NCAA Division I women’s basketball.
Impact of Playmaking Abilities on Offensive Efficiency:
Caitlin Clark’s playmaking abilities significantly contribute to her team’s offensive efficiency. Through detailed analysis using Excel, we examined Caitlin’s overall offensive skills. Caitlin leads the country in assists, showcasing her exceptional playmaking skills. To provide a more holistic view of her impact on the team, we created heat maps in Excel to visualized Caitlin’s distribution of assists, steals, and rebounds (fig 5). These heat maps highlight Caitlin’s versatile and impact beyond scoring, underscoring the impact of her playmaking prowess in driving her team’s success on the offensive end.
In comparison to Steph Curry’s College Career, Caitlin’s performance stands out. Her point percentage is quite close to Curry’s showcasing her scoring ability. Additionally, her rebound-to-assists ration is almost double that of Curry’s demonstrating her versatility and ability to contribute to multiple facets of the game.
Caitlin Clark’s defensive skills and strategies have evolved significantly throughout her college career, influencing her team’s overall performance on the court. While she may not excel in shot-blocking, Caitlin’s overall contribution to the team remains significant. Her defensive efforts often go unnoticed due to the spotlight on her offensive output. Despite not having the highest steal numbers in the league, Caitlin’s defensive presence is felt on the court. Her focus on scoring and playmaking might limit her involvement in rebounding situations, but she compensates by disrupting opponents’ offensive plays and showcasing her defensive awareness. Caitlin’s defensive evolution demonstrates her dedication to become a more complete player. While her offensive game garners attention, her commitment to improving defensively has contributed to her team’s success.
